CMOs are replacing outdated marketing practices with "ABM" principles, and it's triggering a title identity crisis for ABM, Field, and Demand Gen practitioners.

Over the past 18 months, VPs and Heads of Demand Gen have struggled to properly define a modern title for their new hires.

  1. Right now they're just bolting "ABM" onto open Field, Demand Gen, and Integrated Campaigns roles.

  2. Our research says the confusion runs deeper than titles too… a top 3 challenge for ABM teams is a “lack of internal alignment on the definition of ABM”.

Let's break down what's actually happening with ABM + Field.

ABM is Having an Identity Crisis

If you pull up LinkedIn and search for open “ABM” roles, here is a glimpse of what hiring looks like right now:

As you can see, there are a growing number of “Field + ABM” roles open right now.

Here are 3 of the main things that are driving this.

  1. ABM principles are being adopted at scale:

    1. The best practices refined over decades of ABM programs (target account selection, strong sales partnership, etc.) are now the underlying foundation for most enterprise B2B marketing teams.

    2. QuinStreet's listing says it outright, telling candidates to "utilize account-based marketing best practices".

    3. Per our ABM Maturity Report, +50% of orgs say Sales, Demand Gen, Product Marketing, Customer Success, and xDRs are all influenced by ABM.

  2. Field events build stronger relationships (obviously):

    1. Targeting and investing in specific accounts with high-touch experiences and executive engagement is helping teams win more, faster, and waste less budget.

    2. Our 2026 AI in ABM Benchmark Report backs this, as Top Performers extend into in-person events (+18pp) and direct mail (+16pp) at far higher rates than everyone else.

  3. An ABM strategy was never just running digital ads to accounts showing "intent":

    1. Multi-channel orchestration was always a part of ABM, and field was a critical piece from day one.

    2. Reputation's listing articulates this well, as they are asking for their new hire to deploy "integrated, multi-channel field marketing programs, including webinars, virtual events, in-person events, direct mail, and other."

This convergence is bigger than merely Field Marketing, we're seeing the same newly listed "Integrated Campaigns" and “Demand Generation” titles bundling “+ ABM” too.

ABM Was Always More Than Just a “Tactic”

Bunching “Field + ABM” titles is mostly confusing to those that are holding onto some of the biggest misconceptions of ABM:

  • ABM ≠ a siloed team that sits on a marketing island.

  • ABM ≠ just a tactic, channel or one-off campaign.

  • ABM ≠ a "list" of accounts that only receive marketing treatment to generate “MQLs”.

An Account-Based GTM strategy is the underlying strategy for all revenue teams, and marketing deploys it through Enterprise ABM, Growth ABM and Deal-Based ABM.

It defines the level of investment every account receives (budget, resources, and capacity), aligned to a unified Target Account Portfolio.

  • 1:Many ABM: 85%

  • 1:Few ABM: 78%

  • 1:1 ABM: 62%

  • Deal-Based ABM: 50%

ABM principles are influencing every role in the marketing org, and Field Marketing feels it heavily because high-touch events and executive engagement are where targeted account investment makes a significant impact.

Integrated Campaigns and DG are adopting ABM principles at the same scale, so the hybrid titles are showing up there too.

Wrapping Up

"ABM" getting bolted onto Field, DG, and Integrated Campaigns titles is an aftershock of the wide scale adoption of an Account-Based GTM strategy.

Confusing for job seekers? Maybe.

Yet, the bigger takeaway is that revenue teams are finally building a unified Account Investment Strategy that is grounded in a Target Account Portfolio.

Practitioners and leaders who can develop and orchestrate a multi-channel strategy across a full Target Account Portfolio (rather than just a single channel) are holding some of the most valuable skills in B2B marketing right now.
